BS or BA in Finance in the USA?

As you look at the university programs you will quickly realize that some universities offer a Bachelor of Arts(BA) or Bachelor of Science(BS) program in Finance. As an international student, it is important that you understand and know the difference between both types of degrees; even though you will study the same major.

Bachelor of Arts in Finance

With the Bachelor of Arts in Finance or BA in Finance, you can expect a broader mix of courses; some of which will deal directly with finance, business, and accounting. Other portions of the degree program aim to give you as an international student a well-rounded education; allowing you to study courses such as history, psychology, communication, and science.

The BA in Finance is designed for international students looking to pursue a Master’s degree or Graduate, since it gives you much more than just accounting or financial skills. The Bachelor’s of Arts in Finance will give you a solid foundation, preparing you for a Master’s program that will give you a more in-depth understanding and knowledge.

Bachelor of Science in Finance

The Bachelor of Science in Finance or BS in Finance, is much more specific to the field and is designed for international students that are committed to having a career in the field and are not looking to pursue a Master’s degree in Finance. The BS in Finance will usually require fewer general education classes, and more specific finance-related classes such as Corporate Finance, Financial Statements, and/or Investment, and Risk Management. The program will help you build a better understanding of financial applications and equip you for a job in finance.

The BS in Finance, is designed for international students that want a strong emphasis on the practices of Finance and Science. The Bachelor’s in Finance is also designated as a STEM degree, which allows you to work up to three years during your Optional Training Program (OPT); as opposed to only two years if you study a Bachelor of Arts in Finance.  Usually, students that graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Finance will also be paid more initially as opposed to students that graduate with a Bachelor of Arts.

Tips to help you decide between a BA or BS in Finance?

Choose your field

You as an International student need to decide which area within the finance field you would like to focus on, and determine if you want to focus on Financial Planning, Investments, Personal Finance, or any of the concentrations available. Choosing a specific specialization will help you determine which degree is best for you between the BS or BA.

Compare Graduation Requirements

If a university offers both the Bachelor’s of Arts and the Bachelor’s of Science, compare both degree study plans and see how the coursework varies and aligns with what you see yourself working on in the future. See if both programs offer the specializations you want or if the coursework includes unique courses that interest you.

Consider Program Rankings

In the U.S.A, most universities are ranked nationally as an overall institution but more importantly; the programs are also ranked individually. Check and see which are the highest-ranked universities for the field of Finance, and choose the one that best fits your needs and budget. Students graduating from higher-degree-ranked institutions can find better-paying jobs and securing a position much faster than others.
