Electrical Engineering degree types in the U.S?

As you look at the university programs you will quickly realize that some universities offer a Bachelor of Science (BS), others offer a Bachelor of Science in Engineering program (BSE), other universities offers Bachelor in Electrical Engineering and few offer the Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering technology. As an international student is important that you understand and know the difference between the different types of degrees even though you will study the same major.

Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BS)

The Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or BS in Electrical Engineering is a four to five year degree that prepares International students with a strong foundation in Computer Science, Mathematics, and Physical Sciences; which are needed for the understanding of Engineering. International students graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering would have advanced knowledge in areas such as communications, signal processing, energy systems, renewal energy, network and systems, and electromagnetic fields to name a few.

Bachelor in Electrical Engineering Technology (BCET)

Electrical Engineering Technology, is an applied Engineering program that covers product development, product design, maintenance, manufacturing, testing, and quality control. The Electrical Engineering Technology program will give International students a solid foundation and knowledge in the field, and students should be capable of demonstrating a mastery of circuits, computer design, automation, and electronic materials.

Master’s in Electrical Engineering in the USA

International students that already have a Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering can apply for a Master’s in Electrical Engineering program. In order to be considered for a Master’s in Electrical Engineering in the USA, you need to have a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field such as Computer Engineering or Mechanical Engineering from your home country. You will need to have adequate knowledge of several engineering foundations, mathematical concepts, and work experience is usually preferred. International students are likely required to present the GRE exam, and one of the approved English proficiency exams. If you have graduated from an ABET-accredited program such as the Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering, many universities will likely waive the GRE requirement for students graduating from a university with this type of accreditation; as well as those International students with extensive work experience in the field.

In the U.S.A, a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering usually requires you as an International student to choose a specific concentration or specialization, and in many cases, students wishing to be admitted into the program need to write a statement of purpose and a resume during their admission process.
