What is a civil engineering degree?

Civil Engineers are trained and equipped with the knowledge to design, develop, build, and execute structural works that serve the public, building structures such as highways, canals, sewage systems, bridges; and canals to name a few. Civil Engineers can work on projects that are on a huge scale; such as the development of countrywide transportation systems or citywide bridge systems, or on smaller-scale projects such as the development of a building or an individual road. Civil Engineering is a career that advances with technology, and adapts itself to the needs and desires of the public. Civil Engineering degree types in the U.S?

As you look at the university programs you will quickly realize that some universities offer a Bachelor of Science (BS), others offer a Bachelor of Science in Engineering program (BSE), other universities offers Bachelor in Civil Engineering, and few offer the Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering Technology. As an international student is important that you understand and know the difference between the different types of degrees; even though you will study the same major.

Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BS)

The Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or BS in Civil Engineering, is a four to five-year degree that prepares graduates to apply mathematical and scientific principles to the design and supervision of infrastructure components such as: buildings, roads, bridges, dams, tunnels, mass transit systems, and airports.

Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Civil Engineering (BSE)

The Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Civil Engineering is much more specific to the field, and it is designed for international students that want an ABET-accredited program that follows their guidelines and requirements. The BSE in Civil Engineering prepares students to become professionals in the field with a solid foundation of mathematical, scientific, and computational tools to develop and sustain modern communities and large-scale projects.

Bachelor in Civil Engineering

The Bachelor of Civil Engineering is usually broader and more entry-level; this allows international students to work or continue their education in other fields. If you want to study Civil Engineering but you are not sure you this is the career path you want to take, this degree will allow you to take interdisciplinary classes and even do a dual degree in another field.

Bachelor in Civil Engineering Technology (BCET)

Civil Engineering Technologists or Technicians usually assist and help civil engineers plan, design, and develop civil engineering projects. Civil Engineering Technologists usually work in offices as assistants of the head civil engineer, and will also visit the site, collect or test materials, and observe the projects infrastructure as a project inspector.

Master’s in Civil Engineering in the USA

International students that already have a Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering can apply for a Master’s in Civil Engineering program. In order to be considered for a master’s in Civil Engineering in the U.S.A, you need to have a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, or a related field such as electrical engineering or mechanical engineering from your home country.  You will need to have adequate knowledge of several engineering foundations, mathematical concepts, and work experience is usually preferred. International students are also likely required to present the GRE exam, and one of the approved English proficiency exams. If you have graduated from an ABET-accredited program such as the Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering, many universities will most likely waive the GRE requirement during the application process.

In the U.S.A, a master’s degree in Civil Engineering usually requires you as an international student to choose a specific concentration or specialization, and in many cases, students wishing to be admitted into the program need to write a statement of purpose and a resume during their admission process.
