SJSU was founded in 1857 as Minns’ Evening Normal School and is the oldest public school of higher education in California. The school survives a major earthquake, a flu epidemic and World War I. In 1921 it becomes San Jose State Teachers College and San Jose State College in 1934.
Between 1940 and 1960 de university experiences a boom in enrollment. San Jose State College becomes California State University, San Jose in 1972, and then San Jose State University in 1974. Later on, the university makes history getting its first female president, Gail Fullerton.
In the 90’s, the university focuses on diversity. The campus reaches cultural pluralism, with no ethnic majority and today, SJSU continues to be a multicultural model for other universities. From the beginning of 2,000’s and up to this day San Jose State has turned into Silicon Valley’s largest institution of higher learning with more than 30,000 students and 2,400 faculty and staff personnel.
